What Is West Street All About?
When people talk about Yangshuo, they’re usually talking about two things—the amazing karst scenery, and West Street. This is the main pedestrian street that runs right through the center of Yangshuo town, and it’s been the center of tourism here for decades. It’s where everyone goes for dining, shopping, nightlife, and just hanging out after a day of exploring the mountains and rivers.
West Street is about 800 meters long, and it’s completely pedestrian-only. Both sides are lined with restaurants, bars, guesthouses, shops, and cafes. During the day, it’s busy with tourists shopping and eating, and at night it really comes alive with lights, music, and people sitting outside drinking and eating.
Some people say it’s too touristy, and yeah—it is touristy. But I think that’s part of the charm. It’s a place where you can meet travelers from all over the world, try local food, and just enjoy the vibe. After a day of hiking or rafting, it’s the perfect place to relax.

A Bit Of History
Yangshuo has been popular with travelers for a long time, but West Street really started to become famous back in the 1980s when backpackers started discovering it. Back then, it was just a small street with a few cheap guesthouses and restaurants, and it was mostly just backpackers. But as tourism grew in China, West Street grew with it.
Even with all the development, the street still has some of the original old Chinese architecture mixed in with all the modern buildings. Some of the buildings are over 100 years old, and you can still see the traditional Chinese roofs and carvings.
The street got its name because it’s the main street running west out of the old town of Yangshuo, and the name just stuck.

What To Do On West Street
Eat All The Local Food
This is one of the best places to try Guilin and Yangshuo specialties. You’ll find everything from Guilin rice noodles to beer fish (which is a local specialty from Yangshuo) to stuffed snails to sticky rice cakes. There are also plenty of international restaurants if you’re craving something more familiar—pizza, pasta, burgers, coffee, all that stuff.
Shop For Souvenirs
There are dozens of shops selling everything from traditional Chinese crafts to clothes to art. You can find beautiful hand-painted scrolls of the Guilin scenery, hand-carved bamboo products, silver jewelry, and all kinds of souvenirs. Remember to bargain—prices are usually marked up for tourists, so you can often get things for 20-30% less than the asking price.
Enjoy The Nightlife
When the sun goes down, West Street becomes one big party. There are bars with live music, clubs with DJs, and plenty of places just to sit outside with a cold beer and watch the world go by. If you like to go out at night, you’ll definitely find something you like here.
People Watch
One of my favorite things to do on West Street is just find a cafe with an outdoor table, get a coffee, and watch the people go by. You’ll see travelers from every country in the world, local vendors selling their goods, street performers, and families out for a walk. It’s never boring.
