Which Chengdu Airport Should You Use?

Chengdu has two major airports:

• Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU)
• Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU)

They are not different terminals of the same airport. They are two separate airports located far apart.

Shuangliu Airport: Better for Central Chengdu

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport is approximately 16 kilometers southwest of central Chengdu. It is usually the more convenient departure point for travelers staying near Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Tianfu Square, Kuanzhai Alley, Wuhou Shrine, or other central districts.

A private transfer from a central hotel may take around 30–50 minutes in normal conditions, although Chengdu traffic can extend the journey during weekday rush hours.

Shuangliu is often the more comfortable choice for:

From a hotel near Chunxi Road or Tianfu Square, the road journey to Tianfu Airport often requires 60–90 minutes. During heavy traffic, poor weather, or holiday periods, it may take longer.

Tianfu can still be the better choice when:

• The fare is considerably lower
• Shuangliu has no suitable service
• You are already staying in eastern or southeastern Chengdu

Before paying, always read the airport code rather than relying on the word “Chengdu.” CTU means Shuangliu; TFU means Tianfu.

What Time Should You Leave the Hotel?

For a domestic flight, foreign travelers should generally arrive at the airport around two hours before departure. Boarding gates can close well before the scheduled takeoff time, and passport-based check-in may take longer than app-based check-in for Chinese residents.

For example:

• For a 07:30 departure from Shuangliu, leaving a central Chengdu hotel around 04:45–05:00 is reasonable.
• For a 07:30 departure from Tianfu, leaving around 04:00–04:20 may be necessary.
• For a 10:00 departure from Tianfu, departing from the hotel at approximately 06:30–07:00 is usually more comfortable.

This is why an early flight is not automatically the best choice for children or elderly passengers. A late-morning service may create a much easier travel day, even when the ticket costs slightly more.

The price of a Chengdu to Dali flight changes according to demand, booking date, airline, baggage allowance, and travel season.

Dali Old Town

This is convenient for restaurants, evening walks, cafés, local shops, and access to Cangshan Mountain. It is a good base for first-time visitors who enjoy atmosphere and want plenty of dining choices nearby.

However, some hotels are inside narrow or pedestrianized lanes. A taxi may only be able to reach the nearest vehicle-accessible entrance.

Xiaguan and Dali Railway Station Area

Erhai Lake
