Highlights

Tianmen Mountain, Wulingyuan, Furong Town, Miao Culture & Aizhai Bridge

When I learned that I would be guiding an Italian newlywed couple through Zhangjiajie, I knew I did not want their honeymoon to become six days of simply “seeing mountains.”

They loved nature, but during our early conversations I also discovered that they were especially interested in the Miao and Tujia cultures of western Hunan. So I wanted the journey to have two sides: Zhangjiajie’s famous mountain scenery and the quieter cultural experiences found deeper in Xiangxi.

For a honeymoon, I think this balance is important. Spectacular viewpoints give couples beautiful photographs, but small local experiences often become the stories they remember much longer.

Day 1 – Aug 14: Chongqing to Zhangjiajie and Tianmen Mountain

We took an early high-speed train from Chongqing to Zhangjiajie. After arrival, we headed to Tianmen Mountain and followed a selected summit route instead of trying to cover every attraction in one afternoon.

I like using Tianmen Mountain as a first introduction to Zhangjiajie. One moment you are still close to the city, and soon you are standing among cliffs, forests and clouds high above it. Travelers planning their first visit can read our Tianmen Mountain travel guide before deciding how much time to spend on the mountain.

In the evening, we visited the 72 Wonder Tower area. After trains and mountain scenery during the day, the illuminated architecture gave the couple a completely different first-night atmosphere.

☆ Tianmen Mountain Travel Tips:

1) Weather Preparation: Mountain weather can change quickly, even in August. I recommend carrying a light rain jacket in your day bag.

2) Shoes Matter: Comfortable shoes with good grip are much more practical than sandals because mountain paths and viewing platforms can become slippery after rain.

Day 2 – Aug 15: Wulingyuan, Yuanjiajie and Golden Whip Stream

This was our biggest scenery day: Wulingyuan, Bailong Elevator, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Ten-Mile Gallery and a selected section of Golden Whip Stream.

The important thing about visiting Zhangjiajie is not simply knowing the attraction names. It is knowing how to connect them without wasting energy. I used the elevators, sightseeing buses and walking sections to reduce unnecessary backtracking.

At Yuanjiajie, I deliberately gave the newlyweds extra time for photographs. Honeymoon travelers should not have to choose between keeping up with a schedule and enjoying a viewpoint together.

Later, Golden Whip Stream completely changed our perspective. Instead of looking across the mountains from above, we were walking beneath the sandstone peaks beside the forest and stream. This contrast is one reason I always like combining upper mountain viewpoints with a valley walk.

For more planning ideas, travelers can read our Zhangjiajie travel guide and Golden Whip Stream guide.

☆ Wulingyuan Sightseeing Tips:

1) Start Early: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain are among Zhangjiajie’s busiest areas. Leaving earlier usually means a more relaxed experience.

2) Use Scenic Transport Wisely: Bailong Elevator, cableways and sightseeing buses are useful for reducing unnecessary walking, especially on a full-day mountain itinerary.

Day 3 – Aug 16: Huanglong Cave, Baofeng Lake and Furong Town

After the previous day’s mountain adventure, I wanted this day to feel gentler. We began underground at Huanglong Cave and then moved to the peaceful scenery of Baofeng Lake.

Later, we continued to Furong Town. I especially like bringing travelers here in the late afternoon because the atmosphere changes as daylight fades. Traditional wooden houses climb the hillside above the waterfall, and after the lights come on, the town feels completely different.

For couples, I prefer allowing enough time to enjoy the evening instead of treating Furong Town as a quick photo stop.

☆ Furong Town Photography & Walking Tips:

1) Stay Until Evening: The waterfall and traditional houses are particularly beautiful around dusk and after the lights are turned on.

2) Watch the Stone Paths: Paths around the waterfall can become slippery, so shoes with good grip are important.

Day 4 – Aug 17: Furong Town to Dehang Miao Village

This became one of my favorite days of the journey.

After a quiet morning walk in Furong Town, we continued toward Dehang and spent more time experiencing Miao culture. Because the couple had already told me how interested they were in local ethnic traditions, activities such as embroidery and making ciba, a traditional pounded sticky rice cake, were not simply extras. They were an important part of the journey.

One small moment during lunch gave us all a good laugh. Tea was brought to the table together with the bowls and chopsticks. The couple naturally thought they should drink it, so I explained that at this particular restaurant the first tea was being used to rinse the tableware before eating.

They had never seen this before, and their surprised expressions were wonderful. It was only a tiny dining custom, but these are often the cultural details guests remember.

That evening, we joined a bonfire gathering in the village. Travelers who enjoy this side of China can also read about more Chinese ethnic traditions worth traveling for.

☆ Xiangxi Dining & Cultural Tips:

1) Tableware Customs: If tea or hot water arrives before a meal and you are unsure how it should be used, simply ask your guide or restaurant staff.

2) Local Food: Xiangxi cuisine can be flavorful and spicy. Travelers who prefer milder food should mention this before ordering.

3) Respect Local Communities: When visiting Miao villages, it is polite to ask before taking close-up photographs of local residents.

Day 5 – Aug 18: Dehang, Aizhai and Back to Zhangjiajie

We continued through the Xiangxi landscape with Tianwen Platform, Yuquanzi Canyon and Aizhai Bridge before returning to Zhangjiajie.

I enjoyed this day because it showed the couple that western Hunan is much more than Zhangjiajie’s famous sandstone pillars. Here we had mountain villages, deep valleys and one of the region’s most impressive pieces of modern engineering.

Standing near Aizhai Bridge after spending the previous day learning about Miao traditions created an interesting contrast: traditional communities and modern infrastructure existing within the same dramatic mountain landscape.

☆ Aizhai & Dehang Travel Tips:

1) Do Not Rush the Route: Dehang and Aizhai are worth slowing down for. The mountain roads and valley scenery are part of the experience.

2) After-Rain Conditions: Canyon paths can become damp after rain. I normally suggest carrying only a small day bag and leaving unnecessary luggage in the vehicle.

Day 6 – Aug 19: Zhangjiajie to Changsha and Sanya

Our final day together was mainly a transfer day. I helped the couple leave Zhangjiajie and connect by rail through Changsha before their onward flight to Sanya, where the next part of their honeymoon would begin beside the sea.

Transfer days may not look exciting on an itinerary, but as a guide, I think they are an important part of good service. After several busy sightseeing days, guests should not suddenly have to worry about stations, luggage and connections on their own.

☆ Zhangjiajie Transfer Tips:

1) Leave Enough Connection Time: When combining high-speed rail and a domestic flight on the same day, leave a comfortable transfer window instead of choosing the tightest possible connection.

2) Keep Your Passport Accessible: Passports are frequently needed at railway stations and airports in China, so keep them somewhere easy to reach rather than inside your main luggage.

When we said goodbye, what stayed with me was not only how much they loved Zhangjiajie’s scenery. They were still talking about the Miao village, embroidery, ciba, the bonfire evening and even the tea used to rinse their bowls.

That is exactly why I enjoy adding cultural experiences to a nature itinerary. Mountains give travelers the photographs they expected. Small local moments give them the stories they did not expect.
