Chengdu to Lijiang Train: Schedule, Fares & Tips

Table of Contents

Traveling on the Chengdu to Lijiang train is now far simpler than it used to be. Instead of changing trains in Kunming, travelers can take one direct D-series service from Chengdu South Railway Station to Lijiang Station. The journey takes a little over nine hours, making rail a practical choice for visitors who prefer city-center departures, mountain scenery and fewer airport procedures.

The train is especially useful for families, older travelers and anyone carrying several suitcases because it removes the pressure of a transfer. However, there is currently only one direct departure each day, so choosing the correct Chengdu station and booking early are essential.

The direct Chengdu to Lijiang bullet train is a D-series train rather than a G-series service. In everyday travel language, both are commonly described as bullet trains, but the letter on the ticket matters when you check the departure board.

Railway schedules may change after national timetable adjustments. Always confirm the exact departure time, train number and station for your travel date before making non-refundable arrangements.

Schedule and Ticket Fares

The current direct service is D239, departing from Chengdu South in the morning and reaching Lijiang in the late afternoon. The scheduled journey takes approximately 9 hours and 13 minutes.

Reference ticket prices for the direct train are approximately CNY 376 for second class, CNY 602 for first class and CNY 1,243 for business class. Final prices should be checked when tickets are released for your travel date.

Seat ClassReference FareWho It Suits
Second classCNY 376Solo travelers, couples and budget-conscious visitors
First classCNY 602Families, seniors and travelers wanting more personal space
Business classCNY 1,243Travelers prioritizing maximum comfort on a long daytime ride

Second class is perfectly usable, but nine hours is a long time in one seat. First class is often the most sensible upgrade for older parents or children because the carriage is usually calmer and the wider seating makes eating, resting and managing small bags easier.

Business class offers the most privacy and space, but the fare is more than three times the second-class price. For most private-tour guests, first class gives the best balance between comfort and value.

When direct tickets are sold out, the main alternative is to change trains in Kunming. This can turn the journey into a 12- to 14-hour travel day once connection time is included. It may be workable for independent travelers, but it is less attractive for families, senior passengers or anyone carrying several large suitcases.

Route and Main Stops

D239 continues beyond Lijiang toward Shangri-La. Before reaching Lijiang, it normally passes through or stops at Xichang West, Panzhihua South, Yuanmou West and Guangtong North.

After leaving Chengdu, the train travels south through Sichuan toward Xichang and Panzhihua. The landscape gradually changes from dense urban districts to river valleys, mountains and drier terrain.

After entering Yunnan, the train continues through Yuanmou and Guangtong before climbing toward Lijiang. The changing landscape is one of the main reasons some travelers choose the train rather than flying.

Flying is much faster in the air, but the total airport journey also includes the drive to the airport, check-in, security, boarding and the transfer from Lijiang Sanyi International Airport. The train takes longer, yet it provides a straightforward city-to-city travel day and lets passengers see how southwest China changes geographically.

Do not plan to step outside the train during short station stops. Keep your passport, phone and essential belongings with you, and check the carriage display as Lijiang approaches.

Stations and Transfers

Chengdu South Railway Station

The most common mistake on this route is going to Chengdu East Railway Station. D239 departs from Chengdu South Railway Station, written as 成都南站 in Chinese.

Chengdu has several major railway stations, and they are not interchangeable. Our Chengdu railway station guide explains the differences between Chengdu South, Chengdu East, Chengdu West and Chengdu Railway Station.

Chengdu South is connected to Metro Lines 1, 7 and 18. The metro is reliable for travelers with light luggage, and this guide to using the metro in China explains ticket gates, security inspections, payment methods and train transfers.

For an 08:33 departure, travelers staying around Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li or Kuanzhai Alley should usually leave the hotel at approximately 06:15–06:30 when taking the metro. By pre-arranged car, leaving at around 06:35–06:50 may be sufficient in normal traffic.

These are planning estimates rather than guaranteed departure times. Your hotel location, weekday traffic, luggage volume, walking speed and railway-station entrance can all affect the journey.

A DiDi ride can be convenient, but the drop-off areas around large Chinese railway stations can be confusing. Drivers may call passengers in Chinese, and stopping at the wrong entrance can add a considerable walk.

A private car service is generally more predictable for families, older travelers and groups with several suitcases. The driver can confirm the correct station entrance, help unload the luggage and allow extra time for slower passengers.

Lijiang Railway Station

The train arrives at Lijiang Railway Station, written as 丽江站. This is the main passenger station for travelers visiting Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe, Baisha and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Do not choose another station simply because it appears closer on a map. Lijiang Railway Station is the normal arrival point for intercity passenger trains and the most practical station for the main tourist areas.

Lijiang does not currently have a metro system. Public buses operate between the railway station and parts of the city, but they are most suitable for independent travelers carrying light luggage.

DiDi is practical when the app and payment method are already working. A private pickup is usually the smoothest option after a nine-hour train journey, particularly when arriving with children, senior family members or several suitcases.

The drive from the railway station to Lijiang Old Town usually takes approximately 20–30 minutes in normal traffic. However, many hotels and guesthouses are located inside pedestrian-only lanes, so vehicles may only be able to reach the nearest old-town gate.

This creates a real luggage problem that is easy to overlook. The final section may involve uneven cobblestones, bridges, steps and crowded pedestrian streets. An experienced driver or local guide should contact the hotel in advance and confirm the most convenient entrance instead of simply following the map pin.

Booking and Seat Advice

Because there is usually only one direct service each day, travelers should not treat this route like Beijing–Shanghai, where another train may leave shortly afterward. Once your date is confirmed, reserve your preferred seat class as early as possible after tickets are released.

Foreign passengers must book using the same passport they will carry during the journey. The name, passport number and nationality entered in the reservation should match the original document.

Bring your original passport to the station. A passport photograph or photocopy is useful as a backup but should not be treated as a replacement for the physical travel document.

For families and seniors, the direct Chengdu to Lijiang bullet train is normally better than changing trains in Kunming. A connection may look acceptable when comparing departure and arrival times, but moving suitcases through a large station can be far more tiring than expected.

One issue our local team regularly sees is travelers underestimating the time needed to find the correct platform after a transfer. A station may have several waiting halls, security checkpoints and platform levels. A short connection becomes stressful when the group includes children, slower walkers or several large bags.

The direct service protects energy and removes the risk of missing the second train. First class can also make the long daytime journey noticeably easier for travelers who need more personal space.

Passengers with reduced mobility should request railway assistance in advance where possible and arrive earlier than ordinary passengers. Our support for family, senior and accessibility needs focuses on realistic walking distances, luggage handling and transfer timing rather than simply adding more attractions to the itinerary.

Bring drinking water, snacks and a proper lunch. Food may be sold on board, but the selection can be limited and may not meet strict dietary requirements.

Vegetarian, halal and food-allergy travelers should prepare confirmed food before departure rather than depending entirely on station convenience stores or the dining trolley. This is especially important when traveling with children or anyone who needs to eat at regular times.

Chengdu and Lijiang Tips

Before traveling Chengdu to Lijiang by train, give Chengdu at least two full days when your schedule allows. Visit the giant pandas early in the morning, enjoy a traditional teahouse and walk through Kuanzhai Alley.

Food is an essential part of the Chengdu experience. Try dan dan noodles, mapo tofu or an authentic Sichuan hotpot. Travelers who cannot eat spicy food should clearly ask for a non-spicy soup base rather than assuming every hotpot restaurant will automatically provide one.

After arriving in Lijiang, keep the first evening simple. Check in, rest and take a gentle walk through the old town instead of immediately adding a major attraction.

Lijiang is considerably higher than Chengdu, and a full day on the train can leave travelers more tired than expected. Older passengers and children may benefit from a relaxed first evening and an unhurried start the following morning.

Plan two or three full days for Lijiang. The principal highlights include Lijiang Old Town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, Baisha Village and Shuhe Ancient Town.

A Lijiang cultural one-day experience is suitable for travelers who want to understand Naxi culture, traditional villages and local life rather than only taking mountain photographs.

Popular local dishes include cured pork-rib hotpot, chicken pea jelly, flower cakes and seasonal wild mushroom hotpot. Wild mushrooms must be cooked thoroughly, so use reputable restaurants and follow the staff’s instructions before eating.

Tour packages combining Lijiang with Dali, Kunming or Shangri-La: Yunnan tours.

This train route combines naturally with Dali and Shangri-La. It also works well after a Sichuan journey featuring pandas, Dujiangyan or Jiuzhaigou.

During Lijiang’s summer rainy season, avoid arranging a mountain cableway, Tiger Leaping Gorge excursion or tightly timed onward transfer immediately after arrival. Rain may not stop the train, but it can affect road conditions, mountain visibility and scenic-area operations.

For travelers who would rather not coordinate train tickets, station transfers, hotel entrances, dietary needs and English-speaking guides separately, our custom China tours can combine the rail journey with private transportation and a realistic daily itinerary.
