Beijing to Lijiang Flights: Times, Fares & Tips

Table of Contents

Beijing to Lijiang flights are the fastest and most practical way to travel from China’s imperial capital to the mountain scenery and Naxi culture of northwest Yunnan. A nonstop journey usually takes around 3 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours 40 minutes, which is much easier than taking a long train journey with transfers. For travelers with limited vacation time, flying saves most of a day and makes a Beijing–Yunnan itinerary much smoother.

These flights from Beijing to Lijiang are especially helpful for families, senior travelers, and first-time visitors to China who want to include Yunnan in their trip. A connecting itinerary may seem cheaper, but it can turn a short flight into a much longer travel day. Once meals, baggage, terminal changes, and possible delays are considered, the cheapest ticket is not always the best value.

Airports and Airlines

Beijing has two major airports: Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). On this route, nonstop services are often more commonly available from PKX, although flight schedules can change by season and airline.

When searching, it is best to use the city code BJS first and then double-check which airport your flight actually uses before you pay. This matters because Beijing is a huge city, and PEK and PKX are far apart. Booking the wrong airport can create unnecessary stress and extra transfer time.

If you want to understand the difference between the two airports, here is a useful travel guide for you: Beijing airport guide.

At the Lijiang end, regular flights arrive at Lijiang Sanyi International Airport. The airport is around 28 to 30 kilometers from Lijiang Old Town, and the drive usually takes about 40 to 50 minutes. There is no metro connection, so most travelers use a taxi, DiDi, shuttle bus, or private transfer.

One important detail many travelers overlook is that many hotels inside Lijiang Old Town are located along pedestrian-only stone lanes. Cars often cannot stop directly at the hotel entrance. In many cases, you will be dropped off at the nearest gate and then walk a short distance with your luggage. Before you fly, it is smart to ask your hotel for the nearest vehicle-accessible entrance in Chinese.

Fares and Booking Tips

Ticket prices for Beijing to Lijiang flights can vary a lot because Lijiang is a leisure destination. In general, a reasonable budget for a one-way economy ticket is around CNY 800 to CNY 2,000. During Chinese New Year, summer holidays, National Day, and other peak travel periods, fares can rise significantly. Last-minute departures are also usually more expensive.

For most travelers, these five booking tips are the most useful:

  1. Compare both Beijing airports. A cheaper fare is not always better if it means a much longer transfer across the city.
  2. Check the baggage policy carefully. Some lower fares are more restrictive on checked baggage and changes.
  3. Choose a daytime arrival if possible. It is easier to reach your hotel and settle in before dark.
  4. Avoid self-transfer risks. If you book separate tickets with a connection, delays can become expensive.
  5. Book your flight before fixing mountain excursions. This helps you arrange your Lijiang schedule more realistically.

A common mistake is saving a small amount on the airfare but losing comfort and time after landing. For example, an evening arrival may look attractive on paper, but once you factor in the airport transfer, old town walking access, and fatigue, it may not be worth the savings. For many of our clients, especially families and seniors, travel efficiency matters more than a small difference in ticket price.

Arrival and Travel Tips

Lijiang Old Town sits at an altitude of about 2,400 meters. Most travelers can adapt well, but some may feel mild fatigue, dryness, or a light headache on the first evening. That is why we usually recommend keeping your arrival day easy: transfer to the hotel, rest, drink water, have a light dinner, and take a gentle walk around the old town if you still have energy.

We do not recommend visiting Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on the same day as your flight. That trip involves an early start, higher altitude, cableway arrangements, and changing weather conditions. It works much better as a separate full-day excursion.

If you are planning mountain sightseeing, these may help:

Lijiang is worth more than just a quick walk in the busiest streets. If you have time, Baisha Village, Shuhe Ancient Town, and Blue Moon Valley all add a different side of the destination. Baisha feels more local and traditional, while Shuhe is calmer and slower-paced than the main old town area. Blue Moon Valley is one of the easiest scenic spots to enjoy if you want beautiful alpine views without a long hike.

Food and Local Experiences

Food is an important part of a Lijiang trip. We often suggest that first-time visitors try Naxi baba, chicken pea jelly, Yunnan rice noodles, flower cakes, and cured pork rib hot pot. If you arrive at altitude in the afternoon, it is usually better to start with a moderate dinner instead of a very heavy meal and alcohol.

Before leaving Beijing, it is also worth enjoying one classic local meal. Peking duck is the most famous option, while zhajiangmian and Beijing-style copper hot pot are also good choices for travelers who want to try something more local.

Recommended Beijing–Lijiang Route

For first-time visitors, we usually recommend at least 7 days if you want to combine Beijing and Lijiang in one trip without rushing too much. If you also want to add Dali or Shangri-La, 9 to 10 days is much better.

Day 1 – Arrive in Beijing
Private airport pickup, hotel check-in, and a relaxed dinner nearby.

Day 2 – Imperial Beijing
Visit Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and Jingshan Park, then enjoy Peking duck in the evening. For first-time international travelers, an English-speaking guide makes a real difference here because the palace becomes much more meaningful with proper explanation.

Day 3 – The Great Wall
Visit Mutianyu by private car and return to the city for dinner or a hutong walk. We do not recommend combining the Great Wall with a late airport transfer across Beijing.

Day 4 – Fly to Lijiang
Take one of the Beijing to Lijiang flights, arrive in Lijiang, transfer to your hotel, and keep the rest of the day easy. This is the best place in the itinerary to fly, because it saves a great deal of time.

Day 5 – Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley
Spend the day enjoying Lijiang’s most famous natural scenery. Weather and cableway operations can change, so flexibility is important.

Day 6 – Naxi Culture and Ancient Towns
Explore Baisha, Dongba culture, Shuhe, and Lijiang Old Town in the evening. If you want a richer local experience, this is a useful option: Lijiang Cultural Journey.

Day 7 – Continue or Depart
Fly onward, take the train to Dali, or continue by road to Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La.

For a longer Yunnan journey, the most natural extensions are Beijing–Lijiang–Dali–Kunming or Beijing–Lijiang–Tiger Leaping Gorge–Shangri-La. The first is easier and more relaxed, while the second is more dramatic but also more demanding.
