The Beijing to Jiuzhaigou train journey is much easier than it was a few years ago, but travelers still need to understand one important detail: there is no convenient direct train from central Beijing to the entrance of Jiuzhaigou National Park. The most practical route is to take a high-speed train from Beijing to Chengdu, transfer to a train for Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station, and then complete the final section by road.
The journey involves two train sections and a transfer of approximately two hours between Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station and your hotel near the national park. Although it can sometimes be completed in one long day, an overnight stay in Chengdu is more comfortable and leaves more room for schedule changes.
This guide explains train routes, journey times, estimated fares, seat classes, railway stations, local transfers and useful stopover ideas. It also helps you decide whether to travel independently or arrange a private vehicle and English-speaking guide for the mountain section.
Route Overview
For most international visitors, the recommended route is:
Beijing West Railway Station → Chengdu East Railway Station → Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station → Jiuzhaigou hotel or park entrance
The first section is a long-distance G-series high-speed train from Beijing to Chengdu. The fastest trains complete the journey in approximately 7.5 hours, while other departures may take around 9 to 10 hours.
After arriving at Chengdu East Railway Station, travelers transfer to a C- or D-series train bound for Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station. This second rail journey normally takes approximately 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, depending on the train selected.
Although the two rail services use the same Chengdu station in most cases, we recommend allowing at least 90 minutes for the transfer. Chengdu East is a large station, and passengers need time to leave the arrival platform, locate the correct waiting area, complete passport checks and reach the departure gate.
The Beijing to Jiuzhaigou bullet train route can occasionally be completed in one day by taking an early Beijing departure and a later connection from Chengdu. However, you may not arrive at your Jiuzhaigou hotel until late at night because the train station is still approximately two hours from the national park.
For families, senior travelers and first-time visitors to China, spending one night in Chengdu is usually the safer choice. You can rest after the long train journey, enjoy a relaxed evening in the city and continue to Jiuzhaigou the following morning.

Schedules and Ticket Prices
Train numbers and departure times change according to the operating date, so the following schedule should be used as a planning example rather than a guaranteed timetable.
| Rail Section | Example Departure | Example Arrival | Journey Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing West to Chengdu East | Early morning | Mid-afternoon | Approximately 7.5–10 hours |
| Chengdu East to Huanglong Jiuzhai | Morning to early evening | Morning to evening | Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes–2 hours 30 minutes |
| Huanglong Jiuzhai Station to Jiuzhaigou | After train arrival | Jiuzhaigou hotel area | Approximately 2 hours by road |
Reference fares for the two train sections are shown below. Actual prices depend on the selected train, travel date and available seat class.
| Seat Class | Beijing–Chengdu | Chengdu–Huanglong Jiuzhai | Estimated Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second class | CNY 808–883 | CNY 122–151 | CNY 930–1,034 |
| First class | CNY 1,294–1,415 | CNY 195–243 | CNY 1,489–1,658 |
| Business class | CNY 2,503–2,768 | CNY 384–431 | CNY 2,887–3,199 |
Second class offers good value and is comfortable enough for most travelers. Seats are arranged in a 3+2 configuration, and luggage can be stored above the seats or in the storage area at the end of the carriage.
First class has a more spacious 2+2 arrangement. We often recommend it for elderly guests, tall passengers and travelers who would like more personal space during the long Beijing–Chengdu section.
Business class offers wide reclining seats and a quieter environment, but the price is considerably higher. It is most suitable for travelers who prioritize privacy, additional space and maximum comfort.
Not every Chengdu–Huanglong Jiuzhai service provides business-class seats. When arranging the complete route, the seat category may therefore be different on the two sections.
Train tickets are normally released shortly before the departure date. During summer, Chinese public holidays and the autumn foliage season in Jiuzhaigou, suitable departures can sell quickly. Families who need several adjacent seats should avoid waiting until the final few days.

Stations and Transfers
Beijing West Railway Station
Most useful Beijing–Chengdu high-speed trains depart from Beijing West Railway Station, although certain services may use another Beijing station. Always check the complete station name shown on your ticket instead of looking only at the word “Beijing.”
Beijing West Railway Station is connected to Metro Lines 7 and 9. The metro is economical and generally reliable, making it suitable for passengers staying near a direct metro route and traveling with manageable luggage.
Travelers staying near Wangfujing, Qianmen, Sanlitun or the hutong areas may need to change metro lines. During morning and evening rush hours, managing several suitcases inside crowded metro carriages can be uncomfortable.
A DiDi ride is more convenient when there is no direct metro connection. Enter the complete station name and confirm the correct departure entrance, as Beijing West has several access points.
Families, senior travelers and passengers carrying large luggage can use a private car with a local driver. A driver can collect you from the hotel and take you to the appropriate station entrance without requiring you to navigate escalators, metro transfers or busy pedestrian areas.
Plan to reach the station approximately 45–60 minutes before departure. Passengers need to pass a security check, scan or verify their passports and locate the correct waiting hall.
Before leaving Beijing, allow at least three days for the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and a Great Wall excursion. Tour packages covering the capital’s major cultural highlights can be found in our Beijing tours.
Chengdu East Railway Station
Chengdu East Railway Station is the main transfer point for this route. In most cases, both the train from Beijing and the train toward Huanglong Jiuzhai use Chengdu East, so passengers do not need to travel across the city between stations.
Nevertheless, the station is large. Passengers making a same-day connection should follow the transfer signs carefully and avoid booking a connection with only a short gap.
Chengdu East is served by Chengdu Metro Lines 2 and 7. Line 2 provides access to central areas such as Chunxi Road and Tianfu Square. Travelers staying overnight can learn more from our Chengdu railway station guide and Chengdu Metro guide.
For a simple overnight transfer, select a hotel near Chengdu East or beside Metro Line 2. This avoids a long journey back to the station the following morning.
If you have two or three nights, staying in central Chengdu is more enjoyable. You can visit the panda base, relax in People’s Park, watch Sichuan Opera and try local dishes such as hotpot, mapo tofu and dan dan noodles.

Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station
Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station is the most convenient rail gateway for Jiuzhaigou, but it is not located beside the national park. The station is approximately 93 kilometers from the Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area, and the drive usually takes around two hours.
The station is much closer to Huanglong Scenic Area, which makes it possible to combine Huanglong with the transfer to Jiuzhaigou. A common arrangement is to take a morning train from Chengdu, meet a driver at the station, visit Huanglong and continue to a Jiuzhaigou hotel in the evening.
Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station is situated at a relatively high altitude. Travelers arriving from Beijing or Chengdu should move slowly, drink water and avoid rushing with heavy luggage immediately after leaving the train.
There is no metro between the station and Jiuzhaigou. Available options include a scenic shuttle bus, taxi, DiDi or pre-arranged private transfer. Our Jiuzhaigou train station guide provides more details about local transportation.

Transfer to Jiuzhaigou
After arriving at Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station, travelers still need to complete the final mountain-road section. Choosing the right transfer is important because public transportation is less frequent than in Beijing or Chengdu.
Scenic Shuttle Bus
Shuttle buses operate between the station and the Jiuzhaigou area. The journey generally takes approximately two hours, and reference fares are around CNY 50 per person.
This is the most economical choice for independent travelers with light luggage. However, buses follow fixed schedules and usually stop at designated locations rather than providing door-to-door hotel service.
Check the final bus time before booking an evening train. If your train is delayed or arrives after the last departure, finding an immediate alternative may be difficult.
Taxi or DiDi
A taxi or DiDi may be available outside the station, but availability is less predictable than in a major city. Drivers may telephone passengers to confirm the pickup location, and the conversation is normally in Chinese.
Mobile data may also be weaker on parts of the mountain road. For these reasons, app-based transport is useful as a backup but may not be ideal for visitors arriving late or traveling with elderly family members.
Private Transfer
A private vehicle is the most convenient option when you have several suitcases, travel with children or seniors, arrive in the evening, or want to stop at Huanglong before continuing to Jiuzhaigou.
Your driver can meet you at the railway station, assist with luggage and take you directly to the hotel. An English-speaking guide can also accompany you when you want help with tickets, restaurant choices, altitude concerns or sightseeing arrangements.
Private transportation becomes especially valuable during peak season. Instead of waiting for a shared bus or negotiating with a driver after arrival, your vehicle and pickup time are confirmed in advance.

Stopovers and Trip Ideas
The journey from Beijing to Jiuzhaigou is long, but it can become part of a rewarding multi-city itinerary rather than simply a transportation day.
Beijing
First-time visitors should allow at least three full sightseeing days in Beijing. A balanced itinerary includes the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Mutianyu Great Wall and one evening around the traditional hutong neighborhoods.
Local food is also an important part of the Beijing experience. Peking duck, zhajiangmian noodles and copper-pot mutton offer a useful introduction to northern Chinese cuisine. More dining ideas are available in our Beijing food guide.
Xi’an
Some Beijing–Chengdu rail routes pass through or near historically important destinations such as Luoyang and Xi’an.
Xi’an is the best optional stop for travelers interested in Chinese history. Two or three nights provide enough time to visit the Terracotta Warriors, walk or cycle along the City Wall, explore the Muslim Quarter and experience the city’s Tang Dynasty culture.
Adding Xi’an also divides the longest rail section into more manageable journeys. This can be particularly useful for families who do not want to spend eight to ten continuous hours on one train.

Chengdu
Chengdu should not be treated only as a transfer station. A two-night stay allows time for the giant pandas, People’s Park, a traditional teahouse and an evening Sichuan Opera performance.
Travelers who enjoy food can join a neighborhood food walk or try Sichuan hotpot with assistance from a local guide. A guide can explain spice levels, help order a balanced selection of dishes and identify options suitable for children or guests who do not eat spicy food.
Jiuzhaigou
Jiuzhaigou National Park is famous for its blue and turquoise lakes, forested valleys, waterfalls and mountain scenery. One full day is enough to see the principal sightseeing areas with the park’s shuttle-bus system, but the overall trip should include at least two nights near the park.
Visitors who enjoy photography or prefer a slower pace can stay for three nights. This provides more flexibility if the weather changes and avoids placing a long transfer immediately before or after the main sightseeing day.
The most colorful autumn scenery usually attracts high visitor numbers. Hotels, train seats and private vehicles should therefore be arranged early for travel during this period.
